Rolling Delta P&L: Stop Chasing Flow-Through Corrections and Trust the Number in Front of You

Product Update

Summary

Rolling Delta P&L (RDP), now available in Investment & Portfolio Accounting, a part of Arcesium's Opterra® platform, automatically captures back-dated trade corrections and valuation adjustments in the period they actually occurred and recomputes your open-period P&L in real time, eliminating manual flow-through reconciliation for portfolio managers, traders, and risk analysts.

A trade correction comes in today for a trade from three weeks ago. A valuation gets restated for a period you closed last month. In most closed-period accounting systems, that back-dated adjustment doesn't quietly settle into the period where it belongs. It surfaces today, bolted onto whatever period happens to be open as a flow-through. Before you can trust the P&L on your screen, someone on your team has to manually trace where the adjustment should have landed, period by period, and reconcile the difference by hand.

It's a familiar, frustrating ritual in investment operations, and one that may quietly erode confidence in the numbers that matter most. By the time a correction is made, the figure you've been working from might already be stale.

Rolling Delta P&L (RDP), now available in Investment & Portfolio Accounting, a part of Arcesium's Opterra® investment lifecycle management platform, removes that manual reconciliation work entirely. Every event, including adjustments dated well before today, is captured in the period in which it actually occurred, and RDP automatically recomputes your open-period P&L to reflect it. No flow-throughs to unpick. No manual period tracking. No second-guessing which number is current.

What This Means for You

  • Your P&L reflects reality, not a delayed catch-up. Because RDP folds every back-dated adjustment into the period it actually belongs to, the open-period number you're looking at is current, not waiting on a batch reconciliation or a flow-through correction that comes in days later. If you're a portfolio manager or trader making a call on exposure or risk, you're working from the same complete picture as everyone downstream.
  • Performance numbers hold up under scrutiny. Trade corrections and valuation updates land in daily P&L as they're identified, so return and risk analysis built on those numbers does not carry a caveat about what might still change.
  • Less manual reconciliation, more time for analysis. RDP's refresh runs automatically, by default once a day across a configurable 90-day open window, so your team isn't manually tracing which period an adjustment belongs to or rerunning numbers by hand.

How RDP Works

RDP refreshes automatically, recalculating P&L across a window that starts at the oldest impacted date and ends at the most recent, with no manual reruns required. It is event-driven: rather than recalculating everything, it detects what changed in the accounting engine and refreshes only the specific keys affected, keeping the process fast and cost-effective.

Day-to-Date (DTD) numbers inside the refresh window are always kept current, so they stay consistent with the Period-to-Date (PTD) figures used elsewhere in your reporting. You control the pace: the trigger frequency (once a day, default) and the length of the open refresh window (90 days, default) are both configurable to match how your business runs.

RDP is available through the same channels as standard P&L: the platform's API and the P&L detail screen in the UI. It fits into workflows you already use, with nothing new to learn just to see the benefit. And because it works at any level of granularity, you can drill from an individual security up to your full portfolio without switching tools.

Where RDP Fits Alongside Accounting P&L

RDP isn't a replacement for your existing accounting P&L. It's a complement built for a different audience and a different moment in the workflow. Accounting P&L remains the versioned, point-in-time record your fund accountants, performance analysts, operations team, and compliance officers rely on for official reporting and reconciliation. RDP is built for portfolio managers, traders, risk analysts, and research teams who need an as-of-today view that already reflects every prior adjustment, without waiting for the next accounting cycle or adjusting for what changed manually.
